Trey Gowdy to Trump Lawyer: ‘If POTUS Is Innocent, Act Like It’

House Oversight & Government Reform Committee Chairman Trey Gowdy said President Trump’s private attorney is doing him a “disservice” by calling for the firing of Special Counsel Robert Mueller.

Gowdy (R-S.C.) was reacting to remarks from John Dowd, who called the firing of former FBI Deputy Director Andrew McCabe “courageous” and said the Justice Department should follow up by terminating the Russia investigation.

Dowd called the probe “manufactured” by former FBI Director James Comey and added that it was based on a “fraudulent and corrupt dossier.”

Dowd later clarified that he was speaking for himself and not the White House.

“I think the president’s attorney frankly does him a disservice when he says that,” Gowdy said. “If you have an innocent client, Mr. Dowd, act like it.”

Gowdy also warned Trump that any consideration being given to replacing Attorney General Jeff Sessions is also ill-advised.

He said Trump would have trouble getting a replacement for the former Alabama senator through the Senate confirmation process.

“I would just counsel the president. It’s going to be a very, very long, bad 2018,” Gowdy said, urging Trump to simply push through the adversity with the hand he is dealt.
