McCaul Explains How Investigators Tracked Down Austin Bomber

Rep. Michael McCaul (R-Texas) explained Wednesday how authorities were able to track down the Austin bomber and link the explosions.

McCaul said the suspect, Mark Conditt, terrorized his hometown for nearly a month, but the investigators are still examining the motive.

“Now is the time to heal,” he said, adding, “the unanswered question is ‘Why?’.”

A law enforcement official told NBC News the “exotic” batteries originated in Asia, saying “these weren’t your store-bought Duracells.”

McCaul added that the bomber’s digital footprint was picked up after he went into a FedEx Office location in Austin to ship one of the package bombs.

Conditt is seen leaving the building and getting into a red Mazda. McCaul said the vehicle’s license plate was obtained, an identity was secured and police then “pinged” his phone.

Conditt committed suicide by explosion when SWAT descended on his truck along Interstate 35 early Wednesday.
